1. Different types of CDI materials

CDI publishes several types of materials. Their permitted uses depend on the category of material and any licence notice provided with it.

• Open guides and public learning resources: educational materials that CDI has expressly released under an open licence
• Open-source code: code, scripts, commands, or technical templates expressly released under an open-source licence
• CDI Practicals and product materials: structured hands-on learning products made available under individual, institutional, or other product-use terms
• CDI brand assets: CDI names, logos, product covers, visual identity elements, branded graphics, and related materials
• Private or custom materials: mentorship materials, learner feedback, consulting outputs, collaboration materials, institutional resources, and custom training content
• Third-party materials: content created or owned by another person or organization and governed by separate terms

The fact that a material can be viewed publicly does not by itself mean that it is openly licensed or available for unrestricted reuse.

2. Open CDI guides and public resources

Unless a specific resource states otherwise, CDI-created content expressly identified as part of an open CDI guide may use the following licensing structure:

Always check the relevant guide, repository, source file, footer, README, licence file, or attribution notice before reusing a CDI resource.

3. Code under the MIT License

Where CDI code is released under the MIT License, you may generally use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, or sell copies of that code subject to the conditions of the licence.

The MIT License requires the applicable copyright notice and permission notice to be included in all copies or substantial portions of the licensed software.

A general reference to CDI does not replace the requirement to preserve the applicable MIT copyright and permission notice.

The MIT License applies only to material identified as MIT-licensed. It does not automatically license surrounding written content, CDI branding, product files, third-party code, datasets, or other materials found on the same page or in the same repository.

4. Educational content under CC BY 4.0

Where CDI-created educational content is expressly released under CC BY 4.0, you may share and adapt that material, including for commercial purposes, subject to the licence conditions.

Appropriate attribution should, where reasonably practical:

• Identify Complex Data Insights as the source
• Identify the title of the original guide or resource
• Link to the original CDI source
• Link to the CC BY 4.0 licence
• Indicate whether the material was changed or adapted
• Retain existing attribution and copyright notices

Attribution must not suggest that CDI endorses you, your organization, your adaptation, or your use of the material unless CDI has given written permission.

No additional legal or technical restriction may be applied in a way that prevents other recipients from exercising the rights granted by CC BY 4.0.

5. Suggested attribution

Attribution should be clear, reasonably visible, and placed close to the reused material or in an appropriate references, credits, acknowledgements, or licence section.

The precise attribution may be adjusted to suit the format, but it must continue to meet the conditions of the applicable licence.

6. What open licensing may cover

Where the applicable resource is expressly marked with the relevant open licence, open licensing may cover CDI-created:

• Public guide text, explanations, and walkthroughs
• Public Python, R, SQL, Bash, or Quarto code examples
• Public diagrams, charts, and educational visuals
• Open notebook templates and starter scripts
• Reproducible learning examples
• Technical documentation included in an open repository

These permissions apply only to the CDI-created portions of the resource and remain subject to any exceptions, credits, third-party rights, or additional notices included with it.

7. CDI Practicals and product materials

CDI Practicals are productized, hands-on learning experiences that may include guided exercises, datasets, templates, code, examples, checklists, worksheets, downloadable files, buyer-access pages, PDFs, and supporting materials.

Unless a specific product provides different terms, purchasing or receiving access to a CDI Practical grants one named purchaser a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable licence to use the product for individual learning and professional development.

Ownership of the intellectual property does not transfer to the purchaser. Purchasing a product grants permission to use the material within the stated licence; it does not constitute a sale or assignment of the underlying copyright, branding, design, or other intellectual-property rights.

Individual use may include

• Reading and completing the purchased practical
• Running, testing, and modifying code for personal learning
• Completing worksheets, exercises, and checklists
• Saving reasonable personal working copies on devices controlled by the purchaser
• Creating original portfolio evidence or work outputs based on skills learned through the practical
• Referring to the practical during the purchaser’s own professional development

Individual purchase does not include permission to

• Share product files or access links with another person
• Upload the material to a public or private shared repository
• Place the material in a learning-management system, shared drive, course platform, or institutional portal
• Use the product as classroom, workshop, team, or organization-wide training material
• Redistribute or republish the product in whole or in part
• Resell, sublicense, rent, or commercially distribute the product
• Copy substantial parts into another guide, course, product, training program, or subscription service
• Remove CDI branding, copyright notices, licence notices, or attribution and present the material as another party’s work
• Use the product files to create a substantially similar or competing product
• Circumvent buyer-access, download, account, or other access restrictions

A separate institutional, classroom, team, workshop, LMS, or commercial licence may be required for those uses.

8. Learner-created work and portfolio evidence

CDI encourages learners to apply the skills developed through CDI guides and Practicals to create their own analyses, projects, reports, code, professional profiles, portfolio materials, and other original work.

Learners may generally share their own original outputs, subject to any applicable data, software, employment, institutional, confidentiality, and third-party licence requirements.

However, sharing original learner work does not include permission to publish or distribute the underlying CDI Practical, answer guide, template collection, full instructional sequence, buyer-only files, or substantial reproductions of CDI product content.

Where learner work directly adapts openly licensed CDI material, the learner should provide the attribution required by the relevant open licence.

9. Product code and included resources

Code included in a CDI Practical or another product is not automatically MIT-licensed merely because similar code may appear in an open CDI guide.

Product code is governed by the product licence unless it is separately identified as MIT-licensed or released under another stated licence.

A product may also include open-source packages, public datasets, or third-party resources governed by their own licences. Use of those components remains subject to the applicable third-party terms.

10. Materials not automatically open licensed

Unless CDI expressly states otherwise, the following are not released under the general open-guide licences:

• CDI Practicals and productized learning materials
• Paid downloads and buyer-only pages or files
• Product descriptions, purchase notes, and delivery materials
• Worksheets, answer guides, checklists, and product templates
• CDI product covers and promotional graphics
• CDI logos, trademarks, names, and visual identity assets
• Private mentorship materials and learner-specific feedback
• Consulting, collaboration, client, or institutional materials
• Custom training content and private workshop materials
• Unpublished drafts, internal files, and planning materials
• Third-party content included under permission, quotation, fair-use principles, or another third-party licence

11. CDI names, logos, and brand assets

Complex Data Insights, CDI names, logos, product names, cover designs, branded graphics, visual identity elements, and related brand assets are not licensed for general reuse under the MIT License or CC BY 4.0 unless expressly stated.

You may use the CDI name in accurate attribution, citation, commentary, or factual reference to CDI materials.

You may not use CDI branding in a way that:

• Suggests CDI sponsorship, endorsement, certification, or partnership
• Creates confusion about the source of a product or service
• Imitates an official CDI product, website, course, or publication
• Misrepresents an adapted resource as an unchanged CDI resource
• Harms or misuses CDI’s reputation or identity

Written permission may be required to reproduce CDI logos, product covers, branded templates, or other visual identity materials.

12. Third-party materials

CDI guides, products, and websites may reference or incorporate third-party datasets, software packages, code, articles, documentation, screenshots, icons, fonts, illustrations, research, standards, repositories, platforms, or other resources.

Third-party materials remain owned and licensed by their respective rights holders. CDI cannot grant permissions that belong to another person or organization.

Third-party content may be identified through citations, source links, package information, figure notes, dataset documentation, licence files, captions, repository notices, or other attribution.

Before reusing third-party material, you are responsible for checking and complying with its applicable licence, copyright, privacy, data-use, citation, access, and contractual requirements.

The MIT or CC BY 4.0 licence applied to CDI-created material does not override a third party’s rights or terms.

13. Datasets and research materials

Datasets referenced or used in CDI materials may have separate licences, data-use agreements, ethical requirements, access restrictions, citation instructions, or privacy obligations.

A CDI guide or Practical may explain how to work with a dataset without granting ownership of or unrestricted rights to that dataset.

Users remain responsible for confirming whether a dataset may be downloaded, modified, shared, republished, used commercially, or used in a particular research or institutional context.

Identifiable, confidential, controlled-access, clinical, medical, biological, employer, client, or research-participant data must be handled according to all applicable privacy, ethical, institutional, contractual, and legal requirements.

14. Institutional, classroom, team, and commercial use

Open CDI guides may be used in teaching, training, research, professional practice, and commercial settings when the applicable open-licence conditions are followed.

CDI Practicals, product materials, branded templates, and buyer-only resources are not included in that general permission. Separate permission or licensing may be required when these materials will be used:

• In a school, university, research institution, or training centre
• In a classroom, cohort, workshop, bootcamp, or mentorship program
• Within a company, nonprofit organization, laboratory, or team
• Through an LMS, intranet, shared drive, or institutional portal
• As part of a consulting, training, or commercial service
• For multiple learners or users
• In a translated, localized, customized, or co-branded product

CDI may offer institutional access, team licensing, classroom permission, custom training, or collaboration arrangements appropriate to the proposed use.

15. Linking to CDI resources

You may generally link to publicly accessible CDI webpages and open guides, provided that the link is lawful, accurate, and does not imply endorsement or affiliation.

You may not share private product-access links, protected download URLs, account credentials, or buyer-only links with unauthorized users.

CDI may change website structures, URLs, access methods, or delivery arrangements over time. CDI does not guarantee that every external link will remain unchanged or permanently available.

16. Translations and adaptations

Openly licensed CDI materials may be translated or adapted when the applicable licence permits it and its requirements are followed.

A translation or adaptation should clearly state that it has been modified and should not be presented as an official CDI version unless CDI has approved it in writing.

CDI Practicals, product materials, private resources, and branded templates may not be translated, adapted for redistribution, or incorporated into another product without appropriate permission.

17. No endorsement or certification

Reuse of CDI materials does not create a partnership, agency, sponsorship, accreditation, certification, or endorsement relationship with CDI.

You may not state or imply that CDI has reviewed, approved, certified, endorsed, or officially published your adaptation, course, product, service, research, or organization unless CDI has provided written authorization.

18. Permission requests

If your intended use is not clearly permitted by the applicable licence or product terms, contact CDI before using or distributing the material.

A permission request should describe:

• The CDI material you want to use
• How much of the material you want to use
• The proposed format and purpose
• Whether access will be public, private, paid, or free
• The number and type of intended users
• Whether the material will be modified, translated, or branded
• Whether the proposed use is institutional or commercial

Permission is not granted merely because a request has been submitted. Any permission or licence must be confirmed by CDI in writing.

19. Reporting suspected misuse

If you believe CDI material has been copied, redistributed, sold, misrepresented, or used without appropriate permission or attribution, please contact CDI with the relevant details.

Useful information may include the material involved, where it appears, the relevant URL or platform, and why you believe the use may be unauthorized.

20. Changes to this page

CDI may update this Licensing & Attribution page when its materials, products, licensing practices, or legal requirements change.

The revised version will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. A licence already granted for particular material continues to be governed by the version and licence notice applicable to that material, subject to the relevant licence terms and applicable law.

21. Related CDI terms

Use of CDI websites, products, services, and mentorship pathways is also governed by the CDI Terms of Service.

Specific products, repositories, downloads, collaborations, or services may include additional terms. Where those terms apply, they form part of the conditions governing that material or service.
